I'm a relatively new observer of the overall dance scene, and I've noticed that there has been a spate of midsized company closings in the U.S. in the last year. I can think of Oakland and Ballet Internationale. There's ongoing turmoil at Ohio Ballet. Something strange is apparently going on now at Augusta (GA). You've got the woes at Ballet Pacifica. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

So my questions to more seasoned observers are these -- is this unusual, or is it just part of a normal growing-and-shrinking cycle within the dance industry? Most industries go through such a thing, but has it happened before with dance?

And if so, what happens when it's over? Are we left with mostly major players and a smattering of very small companies, until the midsized ones start appearing and growing again?

And what does this do to the pool of talent, looking for employment? Does it also shrink because there are fewer jobs available?

We've gotten into a discussion on the issue, or at least danced around it, on a couple other of recent topics.

First, the topic on Ballet Pacifica, which you can fine here.

Also, in the topic below on the viability of US performance art, which is here.
