The National Endowment for the Arts has scaled back a new initiative to send the best of American culture around the country and is starting with only a tour of visual arts.

Earlier plans included dance and music components.

Am I right in thinking that the $2 million was a whip-round among the Congressmen from their small change. I can't believe that this was meant to be Government funding for a major series of tours - it's too small for that, surely? It's about half the annual grant for Rambert Dance Company, the fifth largest dance company in the UK.

And don't be too sure that the $18M is what the White House really wanted to begin with... Sometimes these requests and proposals are for show...
