Hi, im undertaking some research on the notions of judging community dance performance and the call for a community dance aesthetic, what are peoples views on how we view community performance?

-should we judge the performers or the choreography; if either?

-Is it important to be informed of the process behind the performance and is this more important than the product?

-Do you need dance knowledge to be able to judge a piece?

-Should it be judged on the same level or to the same criteria as professional performance; should it even be judged at all?

There's a few preliminary questions, your input would be greatly received and of course-no right or wrong answers i just need some views and opinions on the matter, Thanks.

Just to clarify one point, DoC, I see that you are from the UK, where the community dance concept is well-established. I'm not clear to what extent it exists elsewhere or whether it is the same animal.

Thus, are you only examining the UK experience or are you wishing to explore an international perspective? The answers to your questions may, of course, be different in each location.

Yes, indeed you're quite right, i had not overlooked this point and thus my enquiries are on an international spectrum, to whatever extent the community dance notion exists. I was unsure as to the degree of existence within the u.s. however any thoughts, opinions or experiences are welcome cheers.

DoC, to help our posters, and particularly our non-UK readers, why not tell us what you understand by the UK use of the term "community dance".
