Fervent objection not exception to the rule

With two religious inspired theatre protests in barely as many months, it might appear that we are at the advent of a new and particularly intolerant era.

In recent years we have grown used to such public objections but have tended to associate them almost exclusively with the Muslim faith. The emergence of the normally quiescent Sikh community as a force to be reckoned with and the revival of Christian evangelism has come as an unwelcome reminder that no denomination has a monopoly on religious outrage.

Annual Equity conference to address censorship of arts

Equity’s annual representative conference will open with a debate on censorship and how to tackle it in the wake of religious opposition to shows such as Behzti in Birmingham and Jerry Springer - the Opera.

Delegates attending the event, due to be held this weekend in Belfast, will debate two motions, one from the Welsh National Committee and one from the North and East London Branch, calling for action by the union to prevent members being intimidated.

My comment: the principal should have told the lone protesting student to celebrate living in a country in which opposing political viewpoints are not only tolerated but (supposedly, at least) encouraged.
