A letter from the California Arts Advocates in regards to a bill intended to improve the quality of dance and theater teachers:

quote:
URGENT ACTION ALERT September 1, 2000
RE: AB 752 (Susan Davis) Credentialing and curriculum: dance and theatre
One of the most important bills affecting arts in the schools has been approved with bipartisan support in the California Assembly & Senate and is now on the Governor's desk. This effort has been underway for 3 years. The Governor must hear from us now! Background AB 752 implements a recommendation in a 1998 California Commission on Teacher Credentialing report on improving the quality of dance and theatre teachers. This bill requires the CTC to provide for an optional concentration in dance or theatre within two or more of the existing single subject credential areas. Currently, if a dance major wants to be a credentialed teacher, they have to get a Physical Education credential; a drama major needs an English credential. This bill alleviates the burden for the candidate to go another 1 or 2 years past their major in order to take courses unrelated to the course they want to teach by giving them the flexibility to be credentialed in other areas. Similar legislation, AB 1024 (Susan Davis) of 1998, was vetoed by Governor Wilson.
Action Requested Letters need to be faxed to the governor ASAP urging him to sign AB 752.
Be sure to reference the bill number and support position clearly at the top of the letter after the address as noted below. Address the Governor as follows: The Honorable Gray Davis Governor's Office State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814
Re: AB 752 (Davis) Credentialing and curriculum: dance and theatre Position: Support
Additional arguments in support of AB752: * It increases the pool of qualified teachers in the fields of theatre and dance who have skills in multiple areas beyond English and Physical Education * With these additional skills, it enhances the teacher's employability within the school district beyond theatre and dance * It attracts more people to the teaching field at a time of teacher shortages by eliminating burdensome teaching credentials formerly required that were outside their field
Fax - do not mail - your letter to Governor Davis at 916 445-4633. Copy our lobbyist at 916 443-7353 and she will prepare a packet of support letters from your faxes for the Governor's consultant's review. Do not email your letters as they should be on your organization's letterhead and have a signature.
Thank you for your help in getting this important legislation the attention it deserves.
California Arts Advocates
2755 Cottage Way, Suite 3
Sacramento, CA 95825
phone (916) 487-8678
fax (916) 484-0503
caa@acso.org
www.CAartsadvocates.org
