You all may be interested to hear what Clive Barnes had to say on this subject. In a November, 1996 editorial in Dance Magazine, he talked about the scathing reviews that the Joffrey Ballet had received in London for "Billboards", a work about which American critics had been somewhat kinder.

quote:
More importantly, I suspect that most, if not all, of the ballet's American reveiwers were very aware that the work's popular success, via Prince's music, offered the Joffrey a vital lifeline from the brink of economic exinction. As a result, we were -- as a group not always famous for our charity -- more inclined to be kind than to be cruel. even critics have hearts and although a certain strain of shock and disappointment ran through many of the notices, most of us --simply, for example, in praising the Laura Dean episode, by far the best, a little more that it perhaps merited -- tried to put a good face on it.
But now the kissing has got to stop. No more good guys. If Arpino and the Joffrey board are sensible, they will call it quits with "Billboards" after its five scheduled performances in Chicago next April. It has served its purpose of saving the company financially. But it -- and other ostentatious pop-oriented works like it -- could still ruin the company artistically, giving Arpino a strange Pyrrhic victory.

I think often of this editorial, because it was the first confirmation I had ever had that the critics might consciously use their reviews more to influence rather than to report.
[This message has been edited by mehunt (edited November 15, 2001).]
