At a fund-raising event in San Francisco recently, the Executive Director of the prestigious Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, stripped naked, to encourage donations to the in-crisis-more-than-they're-acknowledging Theater Artaud. For the full story, go to the

SF's Theater Artaud in Trouble thread.

The questions I have for everyone are:

1. How far would you go to support your favorite arts oganization?

2. Was the stripping necessary? Or is it distasteful?

How far would I go?? I wouldn't strip naked, I do believe it is distasteful. I would and do: go see a dance show, regularly attend my favorite companies shows, send a donation, participate!! I could also possibly donate pointe shoes and costumes.

Well, it's pretty much in keeping with the spirit of its namesake, Antonin Artaud, whose "Theater of the Absurd" was quite revolutionary in Paris in the early to mid 1900's. He would've been proud.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with nudity--it's very spirit of San Francisco, no?
But I do have a problem with mismanagement. And though I'd bet most of Artaud's audience base wasn't offended in the slightest, most of Artaud's audience also doesn't have much money to give--and I doubt stripping will lure affluent donors.
It wasn't lewd, because it was more hippie, more free love, than pornographic in import. And the bodies looked more like ones you'd find on a nudist beach than any you'd see in a strip club.
I'd also like to say that I admire John Killacky's spunky support--though I wonder if anything can help Artaud at this point.
Oh dear, Belinda, from what you tell me my heart goes out to someone stripping and receiving very little money in return.

All my discretionary income goes to the arts - tickets, contributions, the costs of volunteering and other such support. The residue of a civilization is its arts. Trust me, nobody remembers the poor devil who died at Carthage...right?
