MK has given a more detailed interview than most in 'Dance Now'. This is a summary of part:
******************************************
...think of it [the RB] as 3 interconnected galleries.
There is the masterworks wing - 'Swan lake', 'Giselle', 'Les Sylphides'.....
Then there is the 20th C. wing - Ashton, MacMillan, Balanchine, Robbins, Kylian and Tharp.....
Contemporary wing - new work, even especially choreography by people we haven't heard of yet.
Each of these wings is absolutely central to who we are. You cannot be the RB or ABT, POB or now, hopefully the kirov and not respect the huge importance of each of these three wings.
********************************************
Sounds like a good definition of what a major ballet company is all about. Of course, it won't please everybody.
[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited 12-23-1999).]

Remarkable. What clarity of vision this man has. And you are right, Stuart, this definition will not please everyone.

Michael Kaiser has been known to literally bail out companies... including ABT and I believe Alvin Ailey. He seems to know the formula to bring in the most money, which is what most companies are most concerned about right now.
We all know it's impossible to please everyone, wouldn't it be nice to think everybody would be pleased with the company and what they did? I hope though that the technical problems the Royal is having now will not damper his enthusiasm or the momentum he has produced.
