Keeping youth dance on its toes
In February ballet hit the front page. The Times reported Dame Antoinette Sibley’s concerns about a declining passion for ballet in young people who are more drawn to the sedentary activities of modern life. She pointed to ‘theatre’ as a missing ingredient and saw a gloomy future for British ballet without homegrown stars. Ken Livingstone recently exercised political muscle with his threats, later withdrawn, to prevent the redevelopment of White Lodge - the educational mecca for wannabe Billy Elliots. And – the May premiere in the West End of Billy Elliot, the musical, is evidence of the public fascination with and confidence in the story of a boy captivated by dancing despite the odds.
Dame Antoinette Sibley’s comments prompt a range of questions. Which social and cultural factors influence young people dancing in Britain today? How will recent initiatives such as the Royal Ballet School Partnership Programme and Arts Council funded Youth Dance England impact on the infrastructures for youth dance and ballet education? What does ballet give the young person? How can ballet stimulate imaginative and artistic development? What do its myths, metaphors and form offer in modern life? In what ways does ballet represent values that are important?
To tackle the issues we have invited three educators with experience of using ballet in contrasting settings:
Linda Jasper – Director, Youth Dance England
Neil Berry – Headteacher of Brampton Manor Secondary School (Newham, East London) who with the Royal Ballet School instigated the RBS Dance Inclusion Programme
Virginia Taylor – Writer, Lecturer at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and choreographer.
