I think the EMPHASIS on technique has increased and changed at the same time. It use to be that technique was second to artistry- or at least on equal footing. Now if a male corp dancer can't do a triple tour, they might not be hired by alot of companies. Of course athletic abilities have improved, so why not ballet technique!? But the artistry in general depending on the company and
dancers, might be spotty. :) / :(

I would say that nowadays ballet is much more technical as it was in the 19th century. Especially in classical ballet, technique is much more emphasised. Ballet has also become more health-orientated - people are not anymore forced to turn out more than their natural hip turnout allows.
