PRESS RELEASE<P><B>Over 36,000 attend Dance Umbrella 2001</B><P>Dance Umbrella 2001 achieved the highest ever attendance of any festival in the company's 24-year history. With 52 performances across seven venues attendances this year reached just over 36,000 representing an overall attendance of 84%.<P>This year's festival included a world premiere work from Mark Morris Dance Group,<BR>Dance Umbrella commissions from Charles Linehan, Michael Clark, Russell Maliphant and Ricochet Dance Company, and the return of Richard Move as Martha@TheCriterion. <P>Dance Umbrella also presented Stand Up For Dance, its first ever 'Proms' events at Sadler's Wells. 200 seats were removed to allow up to 450 people to stand at the front of the theatre. This initiative gave 4,229 people the chance to experience the work of Mark Morris and Michael Clark for just £5 a ticket. <P><BR>"I am delighted with this year's success both in terms of artistic activity and number of attenders. Once again the Dance Umbrella audience has proved itself loyal, healthy and growing, and capable of breaking box office records for contemporary dance across London - with an increased venue capacity a record 1,712 people enjoyed the first night of Michael Clark at Sadler's Wells."<BR>Val Bourne, Artistic Director<P>Mark Morris Dance Group UK Tour<P>Dance Umbrella secured record-breaking funding from the Art Council of England in the form of the largest single grant awarded to an international contemporary dance company from the National Touring Programme. Managed by Dance Umbrella, with support from American Airlines, Mark Morris Dance Group undertook its most ambitious and successful UK tour to date.<P>"Mark Morris Dance Group enjoyed huge success on tour this year with a beautiful programme of work that reached more people than ever. Over 16,000 tickets were sold during this eight venue tour which took to the road following festival performances at Sadler's Wells. Dance Umbrella look forward to presenting its return visit to the UK." <BR>Val Bourne, Artistic Director<P>2002<P>Dance Umbrella is currently programming the annual autumn festival for 2002. In the Spring, French-based Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu return to the UK for a Dance Umbrella tour of Un Nioc de Paradis / A Slice of Paradise. This charming and engaging work made its UK premiere earlier this year as part of Woking Dance Umbrella 2001. The Olivier Award winning company made its UK debut as part of Dance Umbrella 99.<P>In Un Nioc de Paradis two screens at the back of the stage host a Noah’s Ark of creatures – elephants, dogs, horses, camels, zebras and grandmothers – who appear with the brilliant live dancers who blend classical, contemporary, African and hip hop styles in this joyful slice of paradise.
