Here's a commentary from Eileen McNamara of the Boston Globe, on the loss of holiday traditions in Boston:
Quote:
Holiday cheatings
When did being a hostage to history stop being the whole point of being a Bostonian?
You turn around one day, and “The Nutcracker” is holding an eviction notice, and miniature, mechanized townspeople are boarding up their Enchanted Village. Where’s the outrage?
....
It is one thing to understand the economic forces that have turned Main streets from coast to coast into indistinguishable blocks of retail chain stores. It is quite another to surrender to the idea that Radio City Music Hall and the Wang Center and their audiences are interchangeable. They aren’t.
More... (The Enchanted Village was originally created for and displayed in a large local department store, Jordan Marsh, that was bought out by Macy's. When Macy's stopped displaying it the city took it over, now it is the victim of budget cuts. I'm not sure how long it has been around, it was a well established tradition when I arrived in Boston in the 60's.)
