'Nutcracker' comes alive as students show talent
By Diane Hubbard Burns | Sentinel Dance Critic

The Nutcracker naturally lends itself to the presence of children -- both in the audience and on stage. The Central Florida Ballet, in its second year of presenting the holiday ballet at the Orange County Convention Center in southwest Orlando, has fashioned a production that comfortably mixes talented students with a dozen professional dancers in solo roles.

The company, which opened its production with a matinee Saturday and closes with one today, has fashioned fine family entertainment that can be enjoyed on several levels.

On a high plane is the performance by co-director Heather Sanders, a sublimely lyrical dancer whose rendering of the Sugarplum Fairy is both delicate and regal. Her partner is guest artist Gaël Lambiotte, principal dancer with the Boston Ballet. A silky-smooth partner, Lambiotte also is a dynamic soloist whose split-jetes and turning leaps soar above the stage and land with buttery softness.
