Kids get a taste of the ballet at 'Nutcracker'

Nine-year-old Luis Gonzalez was frantically trying to pick the Sugar Plum Fairy out of the lineup of swirling pink tutus.

"There she is!" Luis nudged his classmate Alexis Torres, and the two boys, reassured, sat back in their plush orchestra-row seats in the gilded glory of the Spreckels Theatre downtown to enjoy the rest of the ballet.

Luis and 46 fellow fourth-graders from Oak Hill Elementary in Escondido got a brush with the classics along with 1,200 schoolchildren from around San Diego County, during subsidized performances of the City Ballet's "Nutcracker" yesterday and today. Their teacher, Beverly Riffle, worried about how her students from the Nintendo generation would handle the subtlety of a nonverbal art form dating back centuries.
