Pantomime profits of times past
Fifty years ago, christmas shows had markedly different budgets to those of today, with production costs ranging from £300 a week to £1,500, and performers' fees ranging from as little as £5 a week to £500 for the headliners, writes Donald Auty for The Stage

Running pantomimes in the fifties was a great deal different economically than it is today. A typical touring show going around number three theatres for five weeks at such theatres as the Palace Attercliffe, Theatre Royal Bilston and Queen's Park Hippodrome, Manchester would cost around £300 per week.
