EVER ORIGINAL BALLET TECH IS SEASON'S TRUE DELIGHT
By CLIVE BARNES in The NY Post

December 24, 2001 -- EVERY year Eliot Feld and his Ballet Tech defy ballet tradition, miss out on most company's cash-cow "The Nutcracker," and presents a holiday program at their Joyce Theater home, cheerfully called: "The NotCracker Season."
Ballet Tech offers two programs, the first featuring Feld's entomological fantasia, "Papillon," with its original 1860 Offenbach score, but nothing like the wildly complex original 1860 story.
click for more
Hawaiian Idyll Under Clouds of Billowing White Silk
By JENNIFER DUNNING in The NY Times

One of Eliot Feld's most enjoyable qualities as a choreographer is his love of oddball music. His new "Pacific Dances," performed by Mr. Feld's Ballet Tech on Thursday night at the Joyce Theater, is a goofily lush response to the goofy, lush and sometimes thrillingly beautiful music of the Hawaiian slack key guitar, performed on tape by several master players.
The ballet's 10 women, dressed in white in what look like abbreviated old-fashioned bathing suits, undulate on a stage that also appears to move ceaselessly.
click for more

Eliot Feld's 'NoTCRACKER'
By Jennie Schulman in Backstage

No, we don't have to attend all those Nutcrackers and Cinderellas when holiday time comes around. Eliot Feld, artistic director-choreographer for Ballet Tech, prides himself on his "Holiday NoTCRACKER Season," which consists of ballets that are just as family-friendly as the two perennials.
Two programs were offered during the Joyce Theater season (Dec. 18-30). Program A consisted of "Papillon" and "Coup de Couperin"; Program B was made up of popular favorites "Straw Hearts," "Pacific Dances," and "The Jig Is Up."
We saw Program A on Dec. 22. What could be a better attraction than "Papillon," where woodland creatures consisting of caterpillars, spiders, and butterflies all cavort to the lilting Offenbach score? The gloriously lavish costumes and highly imaginative scenery designed by Willa Kim are just as enchanting as the clever Feld choreography.
click for more
JACK ANDERSON in The New York Times:

Quote:
With Visions of Insects Fluttering on the Stage
"Papillon" was part of what Ballet Tech, Mr. Feld's company, calls its annual "Holiday Notcracker Season," which features family-friendly entertainment. Possibly to the relief of audiences who feel they have had an overdose of sugarplums, the repertory does not include Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker."
