Hundreds of children dressed in bright holiday clothes sat in quiet anticipation as the Florida West Coast Symphony played the lively overture to "The Nutcracker" opening night at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

As usual, The Nutcracker was entertaining yet professional. Murrish always shines as Clara and Sugarplum, but Phillips-Bosshart is truly lovely ans is the up and coming ballerina.

Hello, Pasha. Thanks for the comments. Would you care to elaborate on the production and the company? I know nothing of either.

Pasha,

I didn't get a chance to see Sarasota's production (I was out of town, doing someone else's); how was the lighting?

I do not represent myself as an expert, only one who genuinely appreciates fine performance. Sarasota Ballet appears to be evolving, bringing in younger dancers and expanding its repertoire. The ballet master, James Buckley, is one to experiment and dive into emotion, while the principal master, Pavel Fomin, is precise and expert in technique. The ballet's Carmen, was a triumph, and may well be one of the final efforts of Alberto Alonso. The young ballerina, Phillips- Bosshart captured the hearts of the audience with her emotion and carried that over to this year's Nutcracker. There is, of course, a place for seasoned dancers, such as Murrish, as well. But, it is refreshing to be so touched by performance as the younger dancers are accomplishing. PS- The lighting, especially in the final scene, was impressive.
