Jared Paul Stern writes in the NY Post about a visit to the ABT Gala. After spending half the article agonising about what to wear, he spends most of the rest of his column criticising the man next to him for not wearing any socks and then showing his appreciaton by clapping too loudly. And then after trying to establish his credentials as a member of the cogniscenti, he blows it big time in the final sentence. Bliss!
'The atomic clapper, or Zeus as he came to be known by intermission, supplemented his thunderclaps with the occasional hoot.

This being a program of vignettes, there were plenty of opportunities for making noise. I felt like pulling a John Simon, the New York Magazine theater critic who angrily urged fellow theatergoers recently to hush their "brats."
All this however could do nothing to dull our enjoyment of the glorious grand jetes, passionate pas de deux, and velvety variations being staged. "The Dying Swan" performed by Nina Ananiashvili was almost too exquisite - some excitable audience members were driven to gasp audibly in a manner more befitting a circus act.
When we return to see "Swan Lake" in its entirety, we hope the gaspers, hooters and thunderclappers stay home.'

[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited May 11, 2000).]

I wonder what the critic will think when he goes to see the entire Swan Lake.
------------------
~Intuviel~
