The BBC is running this little story about how composer Peter Maxwell Davies found himself in trouble with the police after utilizing an electrocuted swan. Not balletic really, but few of us ballet goers can disassociate swans and ballet.

Somehow this bizarre story fits very well with Maxwell Davies. For many years now he has lived in the Orkneys, the most remote part of the UK with its own Viking traditions.
I struggle with his avant-garde music, but I would love to have been at the premiere of his opera "The Martyrdom of St Magnus (1976)". This work, based on a novel by the wonderful Orkney writer, George Mackay Brown, was first heard, appropriately, in the St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney.
Offering the police swan terrine, indeed! It reminds me of the Roald Dahl story, where a wife kills her erring husband with a blow from a leg of lamb and then cooks it. The story ends with the unsuspecting police officers blaming the death on an intruder and eating the roast to humour her.
