Basheva, I've been to Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar's Village), which was renamed "Pushkin" on the 100th anniversary of Pushkin's death. For the record, it's not actually in St. Petersburg, but a short distance outside it. I remembered a performance hall on an island. I wasn't sure whether what Kschessinska describes is that hall or some outdoor venue. But here's a link to a site about Tsarskoe Selo in general. Scroll down and click on "Hall on the Island." This may be the place she was talking about.
PUSHKIN (Tsarskoe Selo)
[This message has been edited by djb (edited April 27, 2002).]

Thanks for that beautiful website, DJB. I am quite sure that is what she meant.
In her book there is also a picture on page 40 of an open air theater at Peterhof. And she speaks of performances at Krasnoe Selo, but I am not sure that it is an open air theater. I would have to read through the book again.

Well, failli, where are the pictures of the quarry theater?
In my initial post I described the Academy of Ballet in San Francisco. Today I had lunch with Alan Howard, who owned the studio when I studied there. I have to correct something I wrote about the studio: it was not originally a carriage house, but a saddle shop. The store was downstairs, and the saddle factory was where the studio now is. (I liked the studio better when I thought they used to make carriages there.)
He also told me that letting visiting ballet companies rehearse their in exchange for perks for his students was a practice of the former owner, and he just continued it.
[This message has been edited by djb (edited May 18, 2002).]
