I went to the opening night of the re-release of The Sound of Music in 1973, at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. Julie Andrews and all or most of the actors who played the children attended. Miss Andrews wore a long beige gown and was quite lovely. You got me in the mood to see the movie again, and my wife and I watched the DVD last night. So there!

Ha! I'll bet you didn't tell Miss Andrews that you thought the Captain should have married the Baroness!

No, I'm afraid Julie and I didn't have the opportunity to hang out that night.

Actually, Uncle Max and the Baroness would have made a good pair.

Well, I have to admit that the appeal of The Sound of Music has, along with that of most Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, has largely eluded me over the years.

I kinda like South Pacific, though.

Over New Year I watched a new Russian TV pop musical version of "Cinderella". This was kitsch squared or cubed - banal songs, garish costumes and sets, weak choreography (but good dancers of course) and much vulgarity. It made "The Sound of Music" seem like Mozart.

I nominate "Kitsch Cubed" as the Clever Phrase of the Month.
