A good piece of humourous travel writing with a dash of dance:

Playground of the stars

Checking into an LA hotel can be like stepping into a movie: lots of stars, not much reality. Just don't forget your script and sunglasses if you want to blend in with the Hollywood A-list, says Jim Keeble in The Observer

I'm having breakfast with Gwyneth Paltrow and her boyfriend Chris Martin from Coldplay. OK, I'm not exactly sharing their porridge, but we are the only diners in the small lobby bar of the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. Our tables are barely five feet apart. And I'm a nervous wreck.

I don't know what to do (look, not look, squint over my coffee cup, begin humming Coldplay's entire back catalogue?). I start wishing I'd purchased some new clothes before coming down to breakfast. Gwyneth looks so felinely gorgeous, Chris is unarguably hip.

My suggestion: Get a life. Actors, contrary to popular belief, are people. Your life won't noticeably change because you sit (or don't sit) 5' away from one.

The same thing, by the way, goes for dancers.

But Tom, we're not talking actors, we're talking GWYNETH PALTROW. I think I would have fainted clean away.

I agree, of course, with Tom.

Actors are just people...and often they're people whose reason for going into the arts was not because they're totally well-adjusted...and, also often, the behavior patterns that lead them to achieve stardom are those that make them less than pleasant people.

Does this mean that all actors are jerks? Of course not; there are many who are fine people*. . . but there's a higher than average chance that, upon seeing in a candid moment an actor whose work you admire, you'll be disappointed.

Oh, no, Tom, you're wrong. My life was changed forever when I saw Danny Glover buying a pair of glasses at the very same place I was buying glasses.

Several years ago, when I realised that David Brinkley (who was, of course, not yet dead) was behind me at the photo processing store, it was only with the utmost in self-restraint that I was able to resist saying, "Good night, David" *

Well, folks, I'm headed to Lala land this weekend to visit some friends and maybe do some martial arts. I'll let you know if we run into any celebrities.

Azlan and I sat behind Bonnie Raitt at a Lines performance a while ago. It took us a full ten minutes to figue out if it was really her. The hair really is spectacular.

I was always take a pair of garden shears to the ballet (no, really!) and if the hair style in front of me is "spectacular" enough to obscure the stage, it's chop-chop time.

OK, I live in LA, I'm used to the famous people thing, but the most disorienting feeling is to see someone, as I did only this afternoon, and realize you're not sure if you know them from 'life' or if they're a performer.

It's happened to me twice in the last 24 hours -- one turned out to be an actor, the other someone I regularly saw at one of my son's activities.

That happened to me when I saw Danny Glover -- I wasn't sure whether he was a movie star or just someone from my office (yeah, right!).

This happened to me too. I had Eric Roberts carry my luggage down to the tour bus in Dallas. I kept saying "Don't I know you? SI at Banff, David Howards class?"
