Fred Austerlitz was born on May 10, 1899. He later went into show business and was described by a studio executive thusly: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances"; nevertheless, Austerlitz achieved success as a dancer, singer, and actor, after changing his surname to "Astaire".

My left-handed trivia calendar also tells me he was left-handed. I am not surprised.

There are three people about whose later lives and careers I often wonder -- the guy who made the above comment, the Decca Records exec who in 1962 wrote, "We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out." (about an aspiring rock band called the Beatles), and the Hewlett Packard supervisor who declined the Apple I because, as he told Steve Wozniak, he didn't think there would ever be a market for home computers.
