When Brunhilde and her eight sisters - clad in black leather and wearing hair extensions like an S&M Bananarama - spotted Wotan heading towards them from the area of the festival femi-loos, it should have been a cue for thunder and lightning. But this opera was happening outdoors on an open stage and no one was in the wings controlling the weather.
