Some of the festivals of Spain are attractive for their very simplicity; the annual Tomatina in Buñol has only one rule: throw tomatoes at everyone else. But Valencia's local festival of Fallas - four days of intense revelry in the middle of March - is a maze of traditions with which you need to have some acquaintance if you are to have any hope of understanding the festivities, or even the city itself.
