You need to work with your teacher on this -- don't just show up for class one day with pointe shoes in hand! Hopefully, they'll either be able to go with you to a dance shop for your first fitting or to bring that person to your studio (like if there's a group of students that are all having their first fitting).

Fit and comfort are critical. You should try several different makes and styles within that particular make. A good clerk will know how to find what works best for you.

different shoes for different people however the bloch aspiration (as of many beginner shoes) works well with most beginners.
