Thank you Stuart and Gina.
The links were really helpful, especially the part about focusing on yourself and not the other dancers in the class. I have a solo prepared but I'm not sure if it's actually required or not. It doesn't say, so I suppose that means it's not, but at least I won't be caught unawares. It also doesn't say whether or not there will be a physical examination as part of the audition, so should I again assume that there won't be one, or that there will? What is a physical examination like? Physically I know that I am not as well suited to dance as many other people. It is not a ballet school (because my body definately isn't suited to that lol) but could I be discounted in a physical examination because of my body? My turnout isn't naturally good but I work hard, as I do on flexibility as well. I also have one leg which is a bit longer than the other. Not much but I did used to have physio for it. I also used to be anorexic and bulimic but have recovered. Would these things count against me?
Also, there are two other parts to the audition- an interview and a written assignment where I will have to write an essay on why I want to dance and what I plan to do with it in the future. What will that be like? Why is this required? How important are these parts compared to the actual dancing?
I know that is quite a few questions, sorry. But if anyone knows the answers I would be very happy.

Thanks again Gina and Stuart

Love Rachel

Hi Rachel! My impression is that the non-ballet world is much less restrictive about physical characteristics etc, so I would try to relax about that issue. And one of the most charismatic Uk dancers of the past 30 years was Christopher Bruce and he had a weakness in one leg (and one shorter I think), which didn't stop him in the least.

The fact that you have a solo prepared, which might not be needed, indicates to me that you are well prepared for this audition. So, please hold on to that thought and go out and dance.

You write that you will have to write an essay on: "why I want to dance and what I plan to do with it in the future." I do recommend that you make some notes beforehand about those two issues:

- why you started dancing
- why you enjoy dance and the way it feels for you
- how much dedication you have shown - classes, exercises, thinking about how to make your dancing better

Also think about where you would like your dancing to lead ie do you want to be a professional or do you want to get as far as you can for enjoyment and satisfaction. As to why they want this information, I think that they want to see that you are thinking longer term and that you are unlikely to pack it in in, say, the next 6 months.

Go for it Rachel!

Thanks again for your advice (and to everyone who wrote something in one of those links too  ), it was really helpful. I just got back from my audition and I got accepted. I'm dead excited. I won't start til August, so I have plenty of time to keep getting excited lol.
Love Rachel

Although one point for the future: whenever something like this is coming up for you again, don't wait until the day before to ask about what to expect! :D
