I was reading a book titled Balanchine Technique and, I think it is in the preface, the author says that during seasonal layoffs within NYCB, she would take up teaching at SAB. What, does anyone know, are seasonal layoffs?

Seasonal layoffs are the time between seasons when there are no performances or rehearsals. Generally during these periods, at least with AGMA contracts, dancers are considered to be unemployed and can collect unemployment benefits.

However, many, if not most, dancers use these times to guest with other companies and/or do other work in the the dance/theatre industry such as teaching, master classes, choreography etc. to make money.

The length and timing of these periods depends on the companies and the year. For instance, for NYCB layoff is usually from the end of the Saratoga Season (about the end of July) until rehearsals start in October. However, it may be shorter if the company goes on tour, as some dancers did this year to Copenhagen or as they have done in the past to the Edinburgh Festival, Greece or Japan.
