Burnet Pavitt
Model Covent Garden board member
By Ian Lowe for the Independent

Burnet Pavitt was just the person you wanted on your side.

An éminence grise, he was discreet, diplomatic, persuasive, as cautious as he was wise, always in the quietest way. "His only fault," as the 11th Earl of Drogheda wrote in his autobiography, Double Harness (1978), "was an excessive modesty, because of which, except in the eyes of his friends, he never received the recognition he deserved." Honour and recognition might have been due for his professional career and for his service to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He did not appear in Who's Who. He retained his privacy to the end, dying in the London house, in Montagu Square, where he had lived for more than 40 years.
