The Critics' Circle Dance Awards 2002:

Best female dancer - Tamara Rojo
Best male dancer - Johan Kobborg
De Valois Award for lifetime achievement - Sir Anthony Dowell
Best Male Newcomer - Edward Watson
Best Female Newcomer - Erina Takahashi
Best Foreign Company - Kirov
Best Choreography - Christopher Wheeldon's 'Polyphonia'

The winners were announced at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House and were sponsored by Sherringtons Solicitors.

These awards are a good idea as it draws some attention to the dance world. To be really effective, they do need to get a higher profile, which should be possible given the media clout of the members.

There are a lot of Royal Ballet winners which reflects the outstanding year that the Company had in 2001. I have two caveats - the first is that it would have been good to see at least one of the awards go to contemporary dance. Maybe 'Best Medium/Small Company' would be a good category, which would enable some more imaginative choices. Secondly, I think the definition of Newcomers needs to be examined. Takahashi is a fine dancer, but she is now a Principal in English National Ballet and it would be more interesting for a genuine newcomer, ie first 2 or 3 years since joining the profession, to be given the award.

Thanks for the reminder sky9, but I surmised that Sir Anthony Dowell might prefer to just have his name, as it was alongside a series of other dance artists without titles. In retrospect, I've changed it to be on the safe side.

[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited January 23, 2002).]
