Lowry to mark birthday in style

THE world's most famous ballet will grace The Lowry stage tonight to mark the arts centre's third birthday - and confirm its international reputation.

This year, the thriving mix of theatres and galleries at Salford Quays has increased its annual turnover from £6.9m to £7.9m - with box office takings soaring by almost 40 per cent - and is breaking even.

Russia's Kirov Ballet will perform Swan Lake in front of a sell out audience tonight, exactly three years since the building opened.

Since April 2000, the Lowry's status has grown, despite having no annual subsidy from arts bodies or public subsidy - except about £350,000 a year from Salford city council, which is the business tax taken from stores in the nearby shopping mall.

Lowry's delight at Kirov coup

THE Lowry's Artistic Director, Robert Robson, is unashamedly overjoyed that they've managed to pull off the remarkable coup of presenting the legendary Kirov Ballet there next week.

"Classical ballet just doesn't come any bigger or better than this," he enthuses.

"We set out from the very beginning to be local, to be national and to be international in outlook.

"Presenting the Kirov is another coup among many coups in The Lowry's short history."

He now admits that, when he began work at The Lowry, his dream was to bring three shows to the landmark theatre.
