LABAN NEWS - Press Release

14 March 2003

For immediate release

Laban’s new Principal and Chief Executive announced

The Chairman and Board of Directors of Laban, following a widely advertised international search, have announced that Anthony Bowne will succeed Dr Marion North OBE as the new Principal and Chief Executive of Laban. Anthony will take up office after the retirement of Marion North on 1 September 2003. Anthony has held the position of Deputy Chief Executive at Laban since 1994 and has been instrumental in the development of the organisation in that time particularly initiating and realising Laban’s new building on Deptford Creekside.

Sir Walter Bodmer, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Laban stated “We were delighted with the quality of applicants for this position and the decision was hard to make. We believe Anthony was the best candidate to guide Laban through the next stage of its development, ensuring the stability of the institution while leading its educational and artistic development in the coming years.”

Anthony Bowne has a BSc (Hons) Economics degree from the University of Southampton, a post-graduate diploma from Laban, and an MSc Architecture (Light and Lighting) degree from
University College London. He has held senior academic positions at both Laban and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. This experience in education is balanced with creative expertise as an internationally renowned, award-winning lighting designer for artists practicing in the UK, Hong Kong and Taiwan; and as Executive Director of Transitions Dance Company.

Anthony said “I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to lead Laban into the future. I aim to strengthen Laban’s position as the leading institution for dance artist training in Europe and its position at the centre of contemporary culture.”

Following her retirement Marion North will become Honorary Life President and Member of the Board of Laban.

ENDS.
