PRESS RELEASE
22 November 2002

THE ROYAL BALLET in HOUSE
PHOTOGRAPHS BY BILL COOPER

Oberon Books, in association with the Royal Opera House, are pleased to announce the launch of The Royal Ballet in House on 6 December 2002. This lavishly illustrated cloth bound book featuring a stunning collection of over two hundred full colour photographs by Bill Cooper captures the first three seasons of The Royal Ballet in their now permanent home at the re-developed Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Presented in the book are 43 ballets from the Company’s extensive repertory including the major classics Swan Lake, Giselle and La Bayadère. Also featured are images from works by The Royal Ballet’s Founder Dame Ninette de Valois, choreographers
Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Antony Tudor and John Cranko. Photographs from world renowned contemporary choreographers include William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato and many more past and present. Christopher Wheeldon’s highly acclaimed Tryst, created to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, provides the striking image for the book’s cover.

World-class dancers caught on camera include, Carlos Acosta, Leanne Benjamin,
Darcey Bussell, Alina Cojocaru, Jonathan Cope, Sylvie Guillem, Johan Kobborg,
Johan Persson, Tamara Rojo, Zenaida Yanowsky, Miyako Yoshida, Inaki Urlezaga and Sarah Wildor amongst many others. With an introduction by Sir Anthony Dowell,
The Royal Ballet in House marks the Company’s enduring success and the fulfilment of Dame Ninette De Valois dream.

Bill Cooper studied dance at the Legat School, Goudhurst Kent. His first professional engagement was at Teatro Son Carlos, Lisbon and then danced with various companies in Switzerland, Belgium and Germany. For the last five years as a dancer with Scottish Ballet, Peter Darrell, Founder and Artistic Director of the Company, encouraged him as a photographer and commissioned him as a production photographer. As an established photographer he now specialises in opera, theatre, music and dance.

This unique vision of work of one of the world’s leading ballet companies will be available from 6 December 2002 at the Royal Opera House Shop and all good bookshops, or on line at www.oberonbooks.com
