Jamie Bell is feeling tired. Sitting in the backroom of a London PR firm the Billy Elliot star is trying to stifle a yawn. He was up all night playing Halo on the Xbox. "It’s the best game out for it," he says. "You can play against your mates. It’s sweet, it’s sweet. That’s what me and me mate did last night ... until half-past four."
At 16, the actor who exploded on to cinema screens two years ago in the heartstring-tugger Billy Elliot, is enjoying his first real taste of independence since leaving his home in Billingham to live with a friend in Hertfordshire. It’s been a hectic couple of years.
He left school this summer after sitting his GCSEs to concentrate on his career (he’s pretty pleased with his results, especially since he was filming an adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Nicholas Nickleby at the time.).
