In my company, we learn how to rehearse with minimal energy. It involves MARKING in time with the MUSIC: 100% correct body directions, 100% arms and upper body, 10% legs & feet. This kind of marking is VERY effective, and would be used to conserve energy right before a show.

We don't just do one show: we do it night after night. Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a minimum. Therefore, even if we didn't have the dress rehearsal the night before, we couldn't afford to spend all we have in just one performance. That is our reality, it may not apply for major roles in large companies.

Also, unless we're near the end of the season, we don't just come into a show cold, certainly not the first night of the weekend. If you see us on a Friday or Saturday, we've usually just put in some rehearsal time, maybe even gone over the entire show. It's not even 24 hours old in our mind; we just do the same thing we did a few hours ago.
