New work from an international collection of young artists studying on Laban’s MA Scenography [Dance] course and MA Dance Studies course, will be on display during Laban’s annual design exhibition. The students, who come from the UK, Japan, Colombia, Belgium, Greece and Finland, have been working collaboratively with choreographers from the outset of the course and have designed set, costume, and lighting specifically for dance. Exhibits, including set design models, video, costume, photography and sketches, demonstrate the collaborative design process from concept to completion; emphasising the importance of the body in space as revealed by light. The exhibition will take place throughout the new Laban building on Deptford Creekside. The annual Deptford X visual arts festival comes to Laban with an exhibition from Yoshiko Nagai and collaborators. During this site-specific project young architects will build an installation by using locally available materials related to recycling and re-use. The designers, Parag Sharma, Shumon Basar and Joshua Bolchover came up with the idea of creating a platform for recycling issues by using the common ‘fridge’ and ‘table’ as a starting point.

Laban’s MA Scenography [Dance] was launched in 1999. It is the only post-graduate Scenography degree course in the world that deals exclusively with dance. The course aims to produce designers who are truly multi-skilled, and who embrace all aspects of the visual presentation of a work. The course’s unique focus on dance enables the student to draw inspiration from non-verbal stimuli provided by the body in space as revealed by light.
