As her career continues to parallel the growth of British dance, the pioneering choreographer sees her next mission as pushing back the conventions of the form's staging, as Kevin Berry finds out for The Stage


Siobhan Davies has been called the country's subtlest and most original choreographer. After a two-year sabbatical her company is busy touring its new work Plants and Ghosts, to what the show's posters call 'different spaces'. These have included an aircraft hanger, an old textile mill, a tea-packing warehouse and a contemporary art gallery. Performances in similarly unusual locations are being planned for this spring and the summer months.

On the one hand, Davies wants to put dance into non-theatrical spaces to attract new audiences but there are other reasons. She wants to rid contemporary dance of some of its restrictions. She wants her audiences to be up close.
