Dance Umbrella launches the 2003 Jerwood Choreography
Awards, now in its 9th year. The most substantial dance awards
in Britain, the Jerwood Choreography Awards consist of:
· One award of £17,000 open to choreographers of any age
· Two awards of £8,500 for choreographers aged 35 or under
· £500 encouragement grants for all shortlisted finalists
Completed applications to be received by 18 August 2003
Since 1994 the Jerwood Choreography Awards have both celebrated emerging talent and rewarded ongoing artistic excellence through the encouragement of innovation, creativity and personal choreographic development. Targeting both independent artists and those working in larger companies, the awards are open to applicants working in any dance language. The Jerwood Choreography Awards offer a rare opportunity to identify and celebrate the excellence and commitment of young dance artists in this country.
Dance Umbrella is delighted to continue its relationship with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation by acting as Managing Agent for the Awards scheme supporting the choreographers throughout the process. Winning projects culminate in an informal performance to an invited audience. How to apply

The Jerwood Choreography Awards are a joint initiative between the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and the Arts Council of England. They are unique in focussing on artistic creations, innovation and choreographic development within a structured and supportive environment.
The Jerwood Charitable Foundation is dedicated to imaginative and responsible funding and sponsorship of the arts, education, design and other areas of human endeavour and excellence. As well as the Choreographic Awards the Jerwood Charitable Foundation supports a series of other initiatives including the Jerwood Painting Prize, the Jerwood Applied Arts Award and, with its parent foundation, the creation and support of the Jerwood Space in central London, a unique resource housing rehearsal facilities, the Jerwood Gallery and Café 171. In addition to the Jerwood Choreography Awards, it also funds the Jerwood Young Directors Scheme at the Young Vic, Jerwood Artists Platform at the Jerwood Space and Jerwood Proms with the Dance Umbrella Festival at Sadler’s Wells among many initiatives.
For the £17,000 Award, any choreographer based in the UK with five years professional choreographic experience is eligible to apply. For the £8,500 Awards, any choreographer aged 35 or under with three years professional choreographic experience is eligible to apply.

In 2003 the £17,000 Award Winner was Rosemary Butcher and the two £8,500 Award Winners were Maresa von Stockert and Ben Wright & Rachel Krische
