White tie and tails may face last dance By Ruth Gledhill in The Times
BALLROOM dancing’s traditional white tie and tails are under threat on the eve of the British Open Championships in Blackpool.
Modernisers believe that the outfits are increasingly out of place, exposing ballroom dancing to ridicule among the young, and are not in keeping with the image of what has become an Olympic-recognised sport.
The rule change is proposed to the British Dance Council by the Glagow-based British Association of Teachers of Dancing. Although the council will not debate it until it meets in July, the proposal was timed to appear in the journal Dance News on the eve of this week’s British Open.
