Lights go up on theatre lost for 64 years
By Jim McBeth for The Scotsman

IN THE very spot where Cary Grant exposed his bottom to pull on white tights, in preparation to entertain the Springburn Locos ladies’ night out, there is now a woman calling bingo numbers in a monotone.

Above, out of sight of the amusement arcade, on the upper floor of Glasgow’s lost theatre, the ghost of 16-year-old Stan Laurel is making his public debut, telling the joke that got him pelted with rivets and dung.

The Panopticon was Britain’s oldest music hall when it closed in 1938, but on 21 and 22 September it will open once more to the public for the first time in 64 years.

A shadow of its former self, the most culturally and architecturally significant theatre in Britain is on the threshold of a £4 million refurbishment plan to be carried out over five years.
