press release..
pegasus theatre presents oxfordshire’s professional dance platform
in the mix 2004
friday 6 & saturday 7 february 8pm £5.50, £3.50 concs., u18’s £2.50 box office 01865 722851
In The Mix, Oxfordshire’s annual showcase of new work and work in progress from the many professional locally based dancers takes place at Pegasus Theatre over two days on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th February at 8pm.
Contemporary dance is a continually evolving artform. Influenced by environment, culture, personal experiences and emotional responses, dancers and choreographers experiment with a purely physical language to express a complex range of ideas.
Oxfordshire boasts a wealth of such artists, many of whom teach a variety of dance disciplines throughout the county whilst, working alone or with others, creating work that discovers new concepts of form and movement.
Pegasus hosts this annual platform for local practitioners and invited guests, held over two performances. Its purpose is to offer an opportunity for new experimental work to be seen by the public and allow performers to show their pieces, sometimes work-in-progress, to a live audience.
Performing in this year’s event are:
TiM (Trials in Movement) with an unfinished piece from Jenny Parrott; choreographer Susan Crow, dancers Bethany Elliott and Tom Linecar experiment with a combination of ballet and live music from Julia Rayson and Joe Philp; Michelle Deussen and Lindsey Lamb have created Metamorphic Memory where the past and future collide; Roller-coaster an inter-generational dance by Cecilia Macfarlane in collaboration with cellist Jaqueline Johnson; Kipperfoot Dance Company perform a piece created for an education project called Smoke with multi media artist Oscar Stringer.
Other featured artists are Jane Connelly, Gelede Dance, Ruth Pethybridge, Galina Kalicin, Tac-au-Tac Dance Theatre.
In The Mix is supported by Oxford City Council through Dancin’ Oxford.

very interesting Susie - clearly dance has come on leaps and bounds since I lived in Oxford in the late 80s

There is a small and supportive local independent dance community here and a great deal of classes in a wide variety of styles. There is very well established youth dance in east Oxford centering on the Pegasus. A major problem is lack of adequate dance spaces, and a consequent lack of public profile for locally based dance activity.
