High Society
Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, London
By John Martland for The Stage

There have been several unsatisfactory attempts to stage High Society over the years and this production appears to be similar to the one that flopped on Broadway in 1998. It has a book by Arthur Kopit and a selection of Cole Porter standards which supplement those drawn from his score for the 1956 film musical of the same title.

The story is still basically the one featured in the movie and its original source, Philip Barry's play The Philadelphia Story.

Review from The Herald.

Quote:
It was Doris Day's finest hour, and without her the film's faults -- it is a pale carbon copy of Annie Get Your Gun -- are blatant. Ian Talbot's attempt to prove High Society can be a stage musical shows, yet again, the wisdom of leaving well alone. It is not actually based on the 1956 film, but on a new version of Philip Barry's play, The Philadelphia Story, devised by Arthur Kopit and first staged in San Francisco in 1997.
