quite right emma, i was perhaps a bit harsh on benjamin. i shall try to remember to go back to my days of more flexible criticism and observation when concerning the roles of the sugar plum fairy and clara especially. out of the classical ballets i have seen, these are the hardest roles to pull off i think, because there is not such a definite persona for the part as there is for many other roles. both need to be pleasant and energetic, clara girlish and both extremely feminine. these are those sort of 'cupcake' roles in dance which i think can be harder perhaps sometimes than say a more drastically dramatic role such as the Queen of the Wilies (i always spell that wrong too, what is the correct spelling?...i should have brought my dictionary with me).

Here's a review that includes the Royal Ballet's Nutcracker:

Quote:
Sublime to surprising dance DVDs
Live recordings' selections range from starstruck 'Nutcracker' to nutty Trocks

Octavio Roca, SF Chronicle

Unexpected season previews from hairy guys in tutus, plus a whole era's worth of dance history, are among the offerings in a recent batch of ballet DVDs.
