Following her success last year in addressing the themes of Sophies Choice from another perspective, choreographer Cathy Marston creates a double bill to coincide with The Royal Opera's world premiere of Thomas Ades's The Tempest. Marston's investigation into these mirrored relationships has led her to Ovid and Auden; the former inspiring Shakespeare, the latter inspired by Shakespeare. Weaving literary, musical and movement ideas together, Marston's 'poetry in motion' evolves with a commissioned score by Jules Maxwell within a world designed by Jon Bausor and lit by Simon Bennison. Completing this double bill is a dance piece taking Ades's Asyla as an embarkation point. Marston explores the ever-shifting score with its sudden changes from slow, sensuous pealing bells to something evocative of The Rite of Spring mixed with the thud of trance music from contemporary club culture. In the echoes of such changing dynamics are flashes of The Tempest, before and after the storm.


Dancers include: Gary Avis, Gildas Diquero, Dylan Elmore, Matthew Hart, Martine Langman, Jenny Tattersall and Joh Williams.

Before the Tempest, After the Storm / Asyla

[Asyla]: While the music stretches from a lean lament to crunching orchestral textures, the five dancers go through a limited repertoire of movement. They roll off one another's back, turn loosely, stretch and turn again. Tattersall dances with real attack, but none of the dancers can lift this piece. It's dance material by the yard, without texture or pattern.

CATHY MARSTON is one of a handful of young British choreographers whose work bridges the classical and contemporary gap. Trained at the Royal Ballet Upper School, she juggles performing with the likes of Arc Dance Company alongside choreographic commissions from English National Ballet, George Piper Dances and Northern Ballet Theatre. (Her newest one-act will be part of the latter troupe’s June triple bill.)
