This article previews the Quinteto Piazzolla coming to The Barbican. Piazzolla was often criticised during his own lifetime for writing tango music that was not tango music. Even now in the tango salons people will complain that it is impossible to dance to. But Piazzolla was before his time - to dance to his music is to take part in a transcendental experience. And he proved that tango has a life of its own that is beyond the dance - more in line with the intellectaul debate behind tango - the type of thing that preoccupied Sabato and Borges.

Although often vilified in his lifetime, in the years since he died in 1992, the Argentinian musician Astor Piazzolla, who invented what he called "new tango", has become lauded by increasing numbers in the classical world as one of the greatest contemporary composers of the last century.

Quinteto Piazzolla play at London's Barbican Centre on May 2 and the Gotan Project tours until May 5.
