Dance is all in the game
Adam Cooper's diary is bursting with work, but he tells MARY BRENNAN in The Herald why he's making time for Scotland.

Adam Cooper admits laughingly he has a tendency to overbook himself. He puts this down to having a low boredom threshold and an itch for challenges. Even so, when he agreed to take part in Saturday's Dance Connections at Glasgow's Theatre Royal he didn't realise he'd be cutting it so fine in time and availability.

The unexpected success of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake in Japan meant its season there was extended twice so Cooper - now famous worldwide for his performance as the Swan - has barely landed back in England before being pitched into rehearsals for Jeux. This is the darkly quirky Darrell ballet he'll be dancing in under a week; a ballet he's never even seen on video, let alone in a theatre.

Consider the pointe well made

The title was spot on. Saturday night's cleverly varied showcase not only connected companies from both sides of the border and from different points on the choreo-graphic compass, it also connected the audience with work it might not have seen otherwise. Would folk who cheered the poise and panache of Nao Sakuma and Chi Cao (from Birmingham Royal Ballet) in a showy morsel of Balanchine have even bought a ticket for Phoenix Dance (represented by Errol White and Yann Seabra in a spiky, combative relationship)?

Would those who revelled in their edgy, contemporary duet have just as eagerly signed up for displays of classic pointe-work on its own? As it was, the mix pulled off that "something for everyone" balancing act, with a treat for Darrell fans: a revival of his much-loved 1963 ballet, Jeux.

Dance Connections *****

IT WAS always going to be special; Scottish Dance Theatre, Scottish Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Phoenix Dance Theatre and Adam Cooper on the same bill.

But watching Dance Connections unfold, it became clear that the show wasn’t just about the performers - it was concerned with dance itself - the multiplicity, allure and downright beauty of the art form.

Running the gamut from classical ballet to contemporary via hip hop and dance theatre, this was a line-up dedicated to diversity.

And, remarkably for a seven-part mixed bill, there wasn’t a single weak link.
