ABT Studio Company By Debra Craine for The Times
IT’S been years since American Ballet Theatre was last in London, and likely to be years before we see it here again. So in the interim we have the London debut of ABT’s Studio Company, a small training ensemble which feeds ABT.
The 12 dancers are aged 16 to 20, and their repertoire is designed to showcase their youthful skills. For this visit to the Linbury Studio Theatre, at the Royal Opera House, the programme was enlivened by vintage Tudor and a world premiere from Robert Hill.
Antony Tudor’s Continuo (from 1971) is a floater for three couples, its delicate textures inspired by Pachelbel’s famous Canon. Tudor made it for the Juilliard Dance Ensemble, and it’s pitched just right for something short and sweet.
