Cliff – The Musical By Mark Shenton for The Stage
The West End appetite for pop nostalgia continues unabated but, unlike the variously dynamic interventions of Mamma Mia!, Our House and even We Will Rock You, which seek to integrate old pop songs within new storybook formats, this tacky, tasteless tribute show to Cliff Richard manages to insult both the fans and their idol.
A cartoon pair of fans, Sharon and Sandra, are a running gag of the witless book, which also feebly caricatures, rather than remotely characterises, everyone from contemporaries such as Cilla Black and Una Stubbs to Sir Cliff himself.
