Returning to the West End this April with a cast of 32 and orchestra of 24, the award-winning National Youth Music Theatre brings its brand new production of Oklahoma - one of the world's greatest musicals to the Peacock Theatre.

Past members of the NYMT include Jude Law, Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting).

A little song and dance routine

It’s Wednesday – only the second day of rehearsals for the National Youth Music Theatre’s latest production – and already the tension is starting to build. Why? Because the first performance of the show is due to take place on Sunday. “ We’ve only got three days left,” musical director Rory Boyle warns his young cast, “ and we’ve got a lot to do”. “ No pressure then”, says a girl at the back.

One side- effect of the latest war in Iraq has been the hoo- haa over the impartiality or otherwise of “ embedded reporters” – journalists attached to specific military units for the duration of the conflict. But whether you think they’re a good thing or not, embedded reporters are here to stay, and not just in the world of war reporting. Recently, the American TV network CNN announced that its theatre critic would be spending a year living and working inside the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, becoming the nation’s first “ embedded critic”.

THE cast of this National Youth Music Theatre revival of the legendary Rogers and Hammerstein musical are bursting with energy and talent. The trouble lies not with the youthful cast, who perform with a will, but the rather older persons who have put the show together.

The direction by Roger Haines is as cliched as can be, and the social nuances he claims to have discerned between cowboys and farmers in his programme note - Trevor Nunn's revival for the Royal National Theatre made much of them - have not made their way on to the stage. The set by Kate Burnett, a ghastly meringue of a sky with a stunted tree, provides no impression of the prairie, let alone fields where the corn is as high as an elephant's eye.
