Stolen moments Ellie Carr for The sunday Herald reviews Innit -- Innat
Scottish step-dance performed by a breakdancer to a soundtrack of bagpipes laid over phat hip-hop beats ... now I've definitely seen it all. But then Freshmess, the Edinburgh-based contemporary dance/breakdance crew, is only doing what Cool Herc and others did at the dawn of hip hop when they stole bits of other peoples music, culture and traditions and fused them to create a new sound entirely of their own.
With Freshmess -- aka B-boys-turned contemporary dancers, Allan Irvine and Wallace Sulley -- the cut, paste and re-edit approach born out of New York's legendary block parties is applied not just to music but to dance.
